Frequently Asked Questions
Below are some of the questions that we are asked most frequently:
Do you receive Government money and, if so, why aren’t your prices cheaper?
Contrary to popular belief, the Port Authority does not receive any money or grants from Federal, Provincial or Municipal Governments. The Port Authority is required to be financially self-sufficient and as such must generate its own revenue to balance annual operating and capital expenses. This is achieved through Harbour Dues, Property Management, Cargo Operations, Moorage, Wharfage, etc
Why do I have to pay at a Government dock?
The marina, which includes the Commercial Inlet Boat Basin, W.E. Mills Landing & Marina are not Government Docks. These are privately owned facilities operated by the Port Authority. The costs of running the operations are subsidized, in part, by user fees.
Do you provide parking at your facilities?
The Port provides on-site pay parking for a total of 180 vehicles on the upper and lower parkade levels at the Pioneer waterfront Plaza adjacent to the Nanaimo Boat Basin. Within easy walking distance from our main office are at least 700 other parking stalls.
