City Reappoints Director to the Port of Nanaimo Board

The City of Nanaimo has reappointed Dr. Michelle Corfield as the municipal representative on the Board of the Port of Nanaimo for a three year term.
To date, Past Chair Michelle Corfield has served six years on the Port of Nanaimo Board of Directors holding various positions and is currently the Chair of the Human Resources and Compensation Committee. During this time Michelle has demonstrated her community leadership skills acting as an integral part of the team responsible for bringing Federal funding to the community including $6.3 million to develop the Vehicle Processing Centre at the Nanaimo Assembly Wharves and $46.2 million for the Duke Point Terminal expansion from the National Trade Corridors Fund. She also participated in the renewal of the Port’s protocol agreements with the Snuneymuxw First Nation, the City of Nanaimo and the Regional District of Nanaimo.
Michelle has a PhD in management and organizational leadership, a Masters of conflict analysis and management and a BA in First Nations studies. She has sat on a variety of Boards and Trusts such as Fortis BC and Fortis Inc., the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC, Vice President of the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council, and Legislative Chair for Ucluelet First Nation implementing the 2nd modern day treaty under the BC Treaty Process. Michelle’s specialties include governance, strategic planning and analysis, human resources, and stakeholder engagement. In addition, Michelle has authored six economic development took kits for First Nations with specific focuses on corporate development, entrepreneurship and elected leadership.

The Port has many key projects underway such as the expansion of the Duke Point container terminal and the development of short sea shipping opportunities for Vancouver Island businesses, a passenger ferry service to downtown Vancouver and a new WCMRC oil spill response base, to name a few. There are many opportunities to work together with businesses and our valued partners on projects that will deliver economic benefits and create jobs in our communities. In order to be great, we must first have a great team and we are fortunate to have Michelle’s skills and experience at our Board table.”
