Donna Hais: A Leader Who Builds Legacies and Bridges Communities

On International Women’s Day, the Port of Nanaimo would like to celebrate the extraordinary achievements of women who pave the way for future generations. One such woman is Donna Hais, Chair of the Board of Directors for the Port of Nanaimo, a third-generation business leader, and an advocate for women’s inclusion in industries like construction and leadership roles.

When asked why she chose to return for a second term as Chair, Donna reflects on the tremendous opportunity the Port holds to create economic impact—not just for the local community of Nanaimo, but for Vancouver Island, British Columbia, and Canada. With a keen understanding of the Port’s potential, Hais is committed to fostering growth and sustainability through strategic planning, knowing that the Port can play a critical role in both the region’s economic future and Canada’s global competitiveness.

Her return was motivated by the opportunity to contribute to a broader vision: “There are tremendous opportunities at the Port of Nanaimo,” she says. “We have the chance to build economic connections that go far beyond our immediate community, and I’m excited to lead that charge.”

Donna Hais’ career path has been defined by hard work, perseverance, and a commitment to building a legacy. Having spent 34 years in construction, Donna has made a significant contribution to R. W (Bob) Wall Ltd., a third-generation family business. In an industry where women were rarely seen in leadership positions, Donna was often a trailblazer. There were no role models or mentors to guide her but that didn’t deter her.

“There were no women in construction when I started,” she recalls. “I was young, so I didn’t recognize the biases, and that worked to my advantage. I always kept an open mind, stayed focused on learning, worked hard and was determined to succeed.”

Donna views what some might consider disadvantages as her greatest strengths. “I believe women bring value by offering a different perspective, innovative problem-solving, and out-of-the-box thinking. By creating unique partnerships and focusing on community benefits, women leaders help drive better outcomes for the projects and the clients.”

Her approach to leadership is rooted in the belief that collaboration and teamwork are the key to success. “I’ve always believed the team is more important than the individual. This mindset not only elevates the team but also ensures that the best ideas and solutions move forward.”

Donna notes that while women have traditionally been underrepresented in construction, this is changing. “Women in construction are becoming more prevalent, from trades workers to engineers to executives,” she says. This shift is a testament to the evolving landscape of the industry and the increasing opportunities for women to rise to leadership positions.

For young women entering traditionally male-dominated fields, Donna offers this advice: “Arrive with an open mind, a spirited approach to teamwork and a dedication to hard work. If you stay true to your core values, success will follow.”

Beyond her work in construction and at the Port of Nanaimo, Donna has dedicated much of her time to health care advocacy. For over 25 years, she has worked tirelessly to establish a community advocacy group that brings together local leaders and residents. Through her efforts, she’s created greater awareness and collaboration around health care issues, ensuring that the voices of the community are heard and that actionable change is made.

“Bringing people together to work towards a common goal—whether in health care or economic development—has always been one of my greatest passions,” Donna says. “When everyone is on the same page, amazing things happen.”

Donna’s role in managing and growing her family’s construction business has been central to her personal and professional life. As a third-generation leader, she has worked hard to ensure the family business thrives, breaking the stereotype that most family companies struggle to survive past the third generation. “I see myself in a caretaking role, working to grow the business so I can pass it on to future generations,” she explains. “This business represents not just a career, but a legacy of community, family, and values.”

Donna’s message to women everywhere is clear: “Know your priorities and stay true to them. If you align your efforts with what you believe in, success will follow.” She believes that staying grounded in your values, working collaboratively, and continuous learning are essential traits for any woman striving to make a meaningful impact in her career.

“Leadership is about more than making decisions. It’s about inspiring others, creating positive change, and leaving a legacy that benefits everyone,” she says. As Chair of the Port of Nanaimo, Donna Hais is focused on leveraging the Port’s potential to create long-term economic benefits and foster sustainable growth. Her leadership, built on her vast experience and unwavering principles, serves as an inspiration to women across industries.

On International Women’s Day, we honor Donna Hais for her leadership at the Port of Nanaimo, her work in construction and her dedication to building a better future for her community. Her legacy is a powerful reminder that when women lead with vision, integrity, and an open mind, they can transform industries, communities, and the world.
