The Resolution Arrives at Nanaimo Port Authority

Nov 21, 2014

Mr. Bernie Dumas, President & CEO of the Nanaimo Port Authority, welcomes a model of Captain James Cook’s Flag Ship “The Resolution” to the Nanaimo Port Authority’s administration office for public viewing. “We are delighted to have the model reside at our administration office while renovations are completed at the Vancouver Island Regional Library. The model is an outstanding reflection of maritime connections to the Island’s rich history. When it comes to ships of any vintage or version, the Nanaimo Port Authority is very interested.”

The model in the picture with commissioned handcrafting artist John D. Hallam commemorated the landing by Captain James Cook at Nooka Sound, March 29, 1778. Displayed at City Hall in 1997 the model was presented to Mayor Frank Ney and Council and the citizens of Nanaimo as a tangible token of the Bi-Centennial Year.

The Vancouver Island Regional Library will be undergoing space configuration changes in the near future. During the work at the Regional Library the City of Nanaimo requested that the model ship be relocated for safe keeping.

Dumas goes on to say, “John Hallam’s work is extraordinary and despite 37 years since the bi-centennial year the model is in excellent shape. We invite the public to come by, take in the handcraft of this local artist, and a balcony view of the Welcome Centre. Our interest in history is represented with a new video on our web site illustrating our evolvement as a port over the last 50 years and a look into the future.” - Visit the new Port Authority website.

The Nanaimo Port Authority’s administration office is located at 100 Port Drive –Nanaimo Assembly Wharf. Office hours are 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM Monday to Friday. A map and driving directions can be found on the new Port Authority website.

The Nanaimo Port Authority is one of 18 Port Authority’s across Canada, established under the Canada Marine Act, to promote and support the National, Regional and local economy and to ensure a safe and secure harbor for cargo operations.
