Back to Back Cruise Visits proves Central Vancouver Island as Cruise Destination

Sep 15, 2016

Coral Princess Call to Nanaimo on Sunday, September 18th and Celebrity Infinity on Monday September 19th, provides back to back impact for Central Vancouver Island.

President & CEO of the Nanaimo Port Authority, Bernie Dumas considers back to back calls by Princess and Celebrity Cruise Lines as proof that the Nanaimo’s gateway to Central Vancouver Island opens the door for passengers looking for a highly desirable preferred destination. “We are so fortunate to be located in one of the most desirable destinations in the world and once travellers discover what we have here many plan to return. Our Island hospitality program with several partners is exceptional and I know from passengers’ feedback that our product is one of the best you can find anywhere.”

The Coral Princess arrives Sunday, September 18th at 7AM and departs at 4PM. Coral Princess is one of two Panamax ships owned and operated by the Princess Cruise Line. She is 294 metres in length with a beam of 32 metres and a passenger capacity of 2000 and 900 crew. She begins in Vancouver, then Nanaimo and on to Fort Lauderdale, Florida as its’ final destination, completing a 23 day itinerary including stops in Oregon, California, Mexico, Central America and Columbia.

Returning from a spring visit the Celebrity Infinity calls on Monday September 19th at 7AM with a planned departure at 3PM. The Celebrity Infinity is 294 metres with approximately 2200 passengers and 1200 crew. She is on an 8 day cruise starting in Vancouver, then Nanaimo, on to San Francisco, Victoria and concluding in Vancouver.

Dumas comments: “We are delighted that both lines chose the Port of Nanaimo for local & regional shore excursions to the Alberni and Cowichan Valleys including the Parksville - Qualicum area.” As passengers arrive in the cruise ship terminal, Tourism Nanaimo Travel Counsellors will greet passengers with entertainment and point the way to photo opportunities with the RCMP in Red Serge, the ‘Big Tub’ and displays of racing tubs from the Loyal Nanaimo Bathtub Society. Cannon Firings at our historic Bastion are scheduled for 11AM, noon, and 1PM. Nanaimo Bar samplings are always part of our renowned hospitality. An added benefit is Shakespeare by the Sea, a production on the Pioneer Waterfront Plaza featuring Othello - Friday evening, Saturday afternoon & evening. Much Ado About Nothing performs Sunday at 1:30 & 7PM, Monday at 1:30.

Passengers can also take in the popular harbourside walkway, the Pioneer Waterfront Plaza and our interesting museums. Complimentary shuttles transport passengers from the cruise ship terminal through downtown Nanaimo where they engage with local volunteers organized by the Downtown Nanaimo BIA. Contact with local culture include the downtown area, galleries, eateries and walking tours which receive positive passenger feedback on a consistent basis. Dumas continues: “Economically, this cruise call will have an average immediate impact of over $300,000 to the region. Additionally, passengers seriously consider our destination for a future multi-day visit.”

The Nanaimo Port Authority is one of 18 Port Authorities across Canada, established under the Canada Marine Act, to promote and support the National, Regional and local economy and to ensure a safe and secure harbour for cargo operations.
