Port Connect Offers Marine Job Opportunities
Nov 23, 2018
November 23, 2018 – NANAIMO – People interested in a career in the marine industry will get a chance to explore possibilities at the Wednesday, Nov. 28 Port Connect job fair at the Port of Nanaimo Passenger Terminal at 100 Port Drive.
The Port of Nanaimo, in partnership with GT Hiring Solutions and Work BC Employment Services Centre, are staging the event, designed to link students and people of all ages with contacts in the marine industry for possible employment.
There will be over 12 participating exhibitors, including Seaspan, Island Ferries, Tetra Tech, WCMRC, Search & Rescue, BC Ferries, Herold Engineering, Western Stevedoring, Helijet, Canadian Coast Guard, Pacific Pilotage Authority, the Port of Nanaimo and more.
Over 250 people are expected to attend the event, which runs from 4:30-7:30 p.m.,
It will differ slightly from traditional hiring fairs, says Port of Nanaimo Chair Michelle Corfield. “Rather than focusing on immediate employment and on-the-spot interviews, we are emphasizing meaningful connections for long-term industry relationships,” says Corfield. “Port Connect will provide attendees and exhibitors the opportunity to make valuable professional contacts, resulting in an influx of qualified and motivated individuals entering the regional marine sector.”
Port of Nanaimo Co-CEO Ian Marr states “This will be an opportunity to showcase their organization to many professionals actively pursuing a career in our growing industry.”
Co-CEO Mike Davidson notes that Port Connect will be different from traditional hiring fairs. “Exhibitors have been asked to provide a ‘story-board’ on a provided easel, to highlight their companies and their role within the industry,” Davidson says. “Representative of each company, will be interacting with the attendees at their booths, and they’ve been encouraged to have brochures or informational material available.
Corfield believes “This will be a phenomenal event for attracting new individuals to consider the marine industry for future employment, as well as to share how their company is making a meaningful contribution to the regional economy. “This event can become a defining event for the central Vancouver Island marine sector.”
