Port’s Patrol Division Support Snowbirds Visit

Aug 07, 2019

AUGUST 7 - NANAIMO – Canada’s famous aeronautical stunt team the Snowbirds will fly over the city August 14, and the Port of Nanaimo is helping support the event, along with other community organizations.

The Port of Nanaimo is providing services along with the RCMP and other response agencies to secure the “Exclusion Zone” around Nanaimo Harbour for the event, which starts at 6 p.m. over Nanaimo Harbour.

“The Port of Nanaimo is very pleased to offer our services and expertise to events like the Snowbirds Air Show that help make our community such a great place to live,” says COO Mike Davidson. “Without sponsorship and support from organizations like the City of Nanaimo and Nanaimo Airport, these events can’t be held without incurring enormous costs, and our staff is always ready and able to be a part of making public events on the waterfront successful."

The Port’s Patrol Division vessels will work on securing the harbour, as it does for other community events like the Dragon Boat Festival and Silly Boat Regatta, Nanaimo Marine Festival’s Bathtub Race and fireworks, amongst others.

Davidson notes that Nanaimo Harbour will be closed to all surface and air traffic within the Exclusion Zone to provide a safety area for the Snowbirds Air Show, starting at 5 p.m., with full closure in effect at 5:30 p.m. The closure is expected to remain in effect until completion of the show, and re-open to traffic at 6:40 p.m.Davidson adds: “This is a great community event that draws families and visitors from a broad region to Nanaimo showcasing why the Harbour is a favourite destination for residents, international boaters and the touring public.”

RCMP members will be aboard security vessels to enforce the Exclusion Zone and closure.
