Unexpected celebration for young seafarer visiting Port of Nanaimo

Sep 27, 2019

190927.jpgWhen MV AMIS BRAVE arrived at anchorage ‘NA4’ within the Nanaimo Port Authority jurisdiction, the Harbour Master’s office became aware of a 24 year old seafarer whose birthday was on the 25th of September.

Members of the Port of Nanaimo wasted no time in planning a celebration for the ordinary Seaman, whose birthday was at sea, away from his family and within the Nanaimo Port Authorities jurisdiction.

The Harbour Master and the Deputy Harbour Master, Captain Satinder Singh and Mr. Rodney Grounds picked up sweets for the crew of MV AMIS BRAVE.

On the day of planned delivery and celebration the weather was not cooperating, a front was passing through the local area with winds up to 25 Kts and waves up to 2 metres. All the same, the Harbour Master and the Deputy Harbour Master were committed to make sure that OS Tran Quang Hung’s birthday was recognized. The Harbour Master personally delivered the a card and treats on behalf of the Port of Nanaimo to the OS and the Captain of the vessel.

“Thank you for caring and celebrating the birthday of my seaman,” said Captain Le Xuan Hao of the gesture, and forrecognizing the loneliness of being at sea and care from the Port of Nanaimo.

“I have celebrated many a birthdays at sea and understand the importance of this gesture”, said Captain Singh. Mr. Rodney Grounds and Mr. Ian Marr added that we at Port of Nanaimo are a family and we treat the visiting vessels and our partners as a family. It is at the core of our value system.
