Meet a Machine set for September 21st

Meet a Machine set for September 21st
Aug 27, 2019
Meet a Machine, an interactive event aimed at introducing young people and prospective employees to machines of all types and sizes, will be held at the Port of Nanaimo September 21 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Nanaimo Assembly Wharf, located at 100 Port Drive.

Machines, such as a helijet, a fire truck from the Nanaimo Airport, police vehicles, farm tractors, excavators, motorcycles, forestry and mining machines and more will be on display for children, teenagers and adults to discover and explore.

“The Port of Nanaimo is pleased to have an event like this on our property,” says Port Chair Donna Hais. “Events similar to these have been held in other areas of the province, and younger people get to try out these machines, and see if perhaps this is what they might want to do as an occupation.  It’s a great introduction to new opportunities.”

A wide range of businesses within the Port of Nanaimo’s jurisdiction offer jobs using heavy duty equipment, some of which will be on site during Meet a Machine.  The annual Port Connect event in early November is another option for identifying possible employment options, particularly for young people and those wanting to connect with port activities.

“If a young person can get the feel of what it’s like to be in some of these machines, perhaps they might want to look at a career involving them,” says Port COO Mike Davidson. “There are a number of companies looking for young people to work for them, and this could be a great way to discover future options for well-paying employment.”

All proceeds benefit JDRF (the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) who is staging the event, sponsored by Telus and Milestone Equipment Contracting Inc. Children 12 and under are free if accompanied by an adult, admittance for teens aged 13-17 years is $5 and adults over 18 years of age is $15.
