November 10, 2016 Press Release RE: Passenger-only Ferry
Nov 10, 2016
Members of the Nanaimo City Council, Snuneymuxw First Nation and Nanaimo Port Authority Liaison Committee met on November 9, 2016 to hear a report from the Technical Advisory Group regarding the applications received to operate a passenger-only ferry service from downtown Nanaimo to downtown Vancouver from the NPA passenger terminal located at 100 Port Drive.
The Technical Advisory Group informed the Committee that Clipper Navigation Inc., an existing ferry operator with over 30 years of experience, removed their expression of interest in September 2016 referencing a lack of local attractions and insufficient ridership forecast for the Nanaimo area.
The City, SFN and NPA will now continue with their due diligence process and take the Technical Advisory Group report to their respective Board and Councils. The Committee will then immediately meet again to finalize next steps. The Committee unanimously agreed that further analysis of the variances between the two remaining applications is required.
“More work is needed analyzing the positive variances between the two applications in order to get to a certain foundation and a positive outcome for everyone.”
– Erralyn Thomas – Snuneymuxw First Nation
“We are encouraged with the progress that we have made to date with the City of Nanaimo, Snuneymuxw First Nation and the Nanaimo Port Authority working together towards a common goal.”
– Tracy Samra – City of Nanaimo
“We were impressed with the quality of the report from the technical advisory group. The report contains a large amount of data that will require further analysis to determine the viability of a sustainable service. We are committed to completing this next phase of the process in a timely fashion.”
