Oil Spill Exercise, Exercise, MV Silver Seas at NPA P-1 Berth

Western Canada Marine Response Corporation (WCMRC) is conducting an oil spill response exercise in Nanaimo Harbour on September 20th and 21st. As part of the exercise, equipment and vessels from WCMRC’s South Coast and Vancouver Island fleets will deploy to a simulated fuel bunker / diesel / hydraulic spill in Nanaimo Harbour. This unannounced exercise is designed to test WCMRC’s capacity for response. WCMRC is supported in the exercise by the Nanaimo Port Authority.

WCMRC is the Transport Canada certified oil spill response organization for Canada’s West Coast. In order to maintain its certification, WCMRC’s training programs and state of readiness are monitored by Transport Canada. The Canadian Coast Guard is present as the Federal on-scene Monitoring Officer.

Media is invited to assemble at 15:30 PM today at the Nanaimo Port Authority, 100 Port Drive – 2nd Floor, for further details and to observe the exercise at the cruise dock facility. WCMRC Nanaimo Port Authority representatives and will be available.

The Nanaimo Port Authority is one of 18 Port Authorities across Canada, established under the Canada Marine Act, to promote and support the National, Regional and local economy and to ensure a safe and secure harbour for cargo operations.
